About Us

At The Js Charity, we exist to make life brighter for young adults in Essex who are living with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. Through free, inclusive events, we offer opportunities to connect, create, laugh, and simply be themselves—all in a safe and understanding environment.
About Us

Our Beginning

The Js Charity was founded in response to a growing need. In April 2023, our trustees carried out a study with potential service users to better understand the gaps in support across Essex. What we heard was clear: many young people felt isolated, overlooked, and disconnected once they reached adulthood.

These young adults told us they didn’t just want services—they wanted community. Somewhere to belong. Somewhere to have fun, share stories, and meet others facing similar challenges.

So, we built something just for them.

THE WHY

Why It Matters

More young people than ever are living into adulthood with serious and complex medical conditions — and that should be celebrated. But with that progress comes the responsibility to ensure they’re not left behind.

According to the Making Every Young Adult Count study (University of York & University of Leeds, 2021), the number of young adults aged 14–25 with life-limiting conditions in England rose by 40% in under a decade — from 27,316 in 2009/10 to 38,261 in 2017/18. This includes those diagnosed in both childhood and young adulthood.

Despite the growing numbers, age-appropriate support is still lacking — especially when it comes to the social side of life: friendship, fun, and peer connection.

That’s exactly why The Js Charity exists — to meet this need in Essex with services that are inclusive, developmentally appropriate, and built around real lives.

“Sarah and I always receive such a warm welcome at The Js. It’s a space where everyone’s included, supported, and free to be themselves. Sarah loves helping out, joining in with music and movement, and greeting others as they arrive. For me, it’s a joy to see her happy and independent again. The Js Days have filled a gap that so many other services left behind."
